# The CFO's Waiting Room: Evidence and Methods

Evidence edition: 2026-09-12. Scope: eight deliberately selected US-reporting
multinationals and fiscal periods ending in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025. This is an
independent educational comparison, not a random sample, an investment
recommendation, a customer ranking or an estimate of purchase intent.

## Reproduce the Calculation

The research kit needs Node.js 22 or later and no additional packages:

```text
node reproduce.mjs
```

The command checks the selected-facts checksum, recomputes every published account,
reconciles UPS and Texas Instruments to independently read report tables, checks
the inventory/receivable dates, and verifies the selected-use and non-GAAP
definitions. It makes no network requests and changes no files.

The kit contains the compact selected SEC observations, not the full approximately
38 MB of Company Facts responses. Each company source retains its URL, actual
retrieval timestamp, raw-response SHA-256 and byte count. Full raw-to-selected
reproduction requires those exact saved responses. Downloading an updated SEC
response is a new source vintage and must not silently replace this one.

## Source Selection

The SEC Company Facts API supplies US-GAAP facts in USD. The extractor admits
annual Form 10-K duration observations of 350-380 inclusive days, groups by the
calendar year containing the fiscal end, and chooses the latest available filing
within the 2026-09-12 cutoff. The start/end dates, taxonomy tag, accession and
filing date remain attached to each fact. Comparative observations may be revised
by later filings. These are not contemporaneous information sets for a backtest.

The selected cash-use tags are property/plant/equipment payments, cash dividends,
and common-stock repurchases. Revenue and operating income use same-period annual
observations; inventory and net current receivables are point-in-time stocks.
The precise allowed tags and selector are in data.mjs.

An absent standard tag is unavailable, not zero. PepsiCo's broader productive-assets
measure and broader financing/receivable scopes are not silently substituted.
IBM, Caterpillar and Deere include financing businesses in consolidated results.
Honeywell's portfolio changes complicate period comparisons. Fiscal calendars
differ. Read issuer definitions before drawing cross-company conclusions.

## Definitions

- Selected-use balance = operating cash flow - capex - cash dividends - share
repurchases. All four inputs must be available and use the same fiscal period.
- Operating margin = operating income / revenue, times 100, with a positive
  revenue denominator and aligned periods.
- Capex / operating cash = the selected capital-payment measure / positive
operating cash flow, times 100. Missing inputs suppress the ratio.
- Inventory and net current receivables are distinct year-end stocks. They are
not deducted from cash flow a second time, nor treated as instant cash savings.

The selected-use balance is not cash on hand, total cash change, company-defined
free cash flow, a funding requirement, a solvency test or an available software
budget. Borrowing, repayments, acquisitions, disposals, opening cash and other
flows are outside this abbreviated account. Cash is fungible; the receipt does
not trace particular dollars or establish a payment order. Some technology costs
are operating expenses already inside operating cash; some are capitalized.

## Report Cross-Checks and Counterevidence

UPS's 2025 10-K (filed 2026-02-17, pages 42-44 and 63) reports operating cash
of $8,450 million, capex of $3,685 million, cash dividends of $5,398 million and
repurchases of $1,000 million. The selected-use balance is -$1,633 million, while
the actual change in cash is -$225 million. Information-technology capex rose
from $825 million in 2024 to $1,063 million in 2025, while total capex fell from
$3,909 million. Finance did not cease investing in technology. This does not
identify an open budget or spending with any particular vendor.

Texas Instruments' 2025 10-K (filed 2026-02-06, pages 20-23 and 27-30) reports
operating cash of $7,153 million, capex of $4,550 million, dividends of $4,999
million and repurchases of $1,477 million. Its own non-GAAP free cash flow is
$2,938 million: operating cash less capex plus $335 million of CHIPS investing
proceeds. A separate $335 million tax benefit is already in operating cash.
Adding it again would double-count that benefit. Operating income of $6,023
million on revenue of $17,682 million implies a 34.0629% operating margin.

Company priorities are dated paraphrases of these reports, not current intentions
to purchase a product. TI describes deliberately building inventory ahead of
demand. UPS began a receivables-factoring program in 2025. Neither a stock change
nor the sales narrative identifies a cash-release opportunity without further
customer evidence.

## Integrity and Reuse

There are 32 company-years and 256 selected metric cells. Twenty-three cells are
unavailable, and 22 cash accounts have all four inputs. Negative results and
incomplete cases are retained. There is no imputation, regression, causal claim,
win-rate prediction or invented uncertainty interval.

Sources are public regulatory facts. Issuer prose is linked and paraphrased, not
republished as a report archive. The waiting-room illustration, visitor, dialogue
and pitch responses are fictional. They are not statements by any company or CFO.
Private briefing notes are reader assumptions, stored only in the active browser
tab and included only in an explicitly downloaded or printed brief. They never
enter the public-state URL or this research kit.

Check claims-v1.csv for the headline claim ledger, exact-values-v1.csv for source
facts, cash-accounts-v1.csv for derived observations, sources-v1.json for provenance,
and checksums.sha256 for member identities. No private account or CRM data are used.
