The V-Shape Arena: Power vs. Economy
Visualizing the structural trade-off at the heart of 1970s automotive engineering through the lens of the classic mtcars dataset.
The Trade-off Story
The arena visually confirms the familiar economics of the combustion engine: as we climb the power ladder, fuel economy almost always falls. The visualization uses a "slope graph" technique to make these inverse relationships explicitly visible as crossing lines.
Notice the cluster of high-performance vehicles like the Maserati Bora and Ford Pantera L at the bottom right—their lines plummet from low MPG to high HP. In contrast, the economy class, led by the Toyota Corolla and Fiat 128, stays high on the left but drops significantly on the right.
"Every slanted line represents a model stretching between thrift and power, exposing the structural trade-off at the heart of 1970s car engineering."
