What does ocean heat reveal that surface temperature misses?

How do changes in ocean heat storage compare with surface-temperature variation over aligned, sufficiently long observation windows?

The question

Surface temperature and accumulated ocean heat describe different parts of the climate system. The proposed study compares their timing without converting one into the other.

Why it matters

A single surface reading cannot describe the system's stored energy; the distinction matters for interpreting apparent pauses and long-term commitment.

The AR6 anchor

AR6 assesses widespread ocean change and finds that some future changes are unavoidable or irreversible, although sustained mitigation can limit them (high confidence).

Evidence and comparison

Unit of analysis
World-year and explicitly labeled multiyear heat-uptake periods.
Baseline and denominator
Retain IGCC heat-content reference and depth coverage exactly as documented; NASA keeps 1951-1980. Compare temporal changes, not numeric levels across unlike units.
First descriptive test
Present ocean heat storage and surface-temperature change in aligned panels, comparing common ten- and twenty-year windows rather than synchronizing arbitrary vertical scales.
Deeper analysis
Separate changes in measured ocean layers from extrapolated deep-ocean contributions; inspect sensitivity to the satellite-era window and source revisions before discussing acceleration.

Preserve published energy-imbalance intervals. IGCC uses ocean heat uptake as a proxy for total-system uptake in recent years; label that methodological boundary.

What these data do not show

  • Global ocean heat cannot locate a particular marine ecosystem's exposure.
  • Shared inputs and sampling errors prevent treating every series as independent evidence.

Reproducibility and next release

Plan src/build.mjs to create data/processed/heat-inventory.csv from versioned data/raw tables; test period alignment, energy units and depth accounting, with source hashes and licensing decisions in provenance.
