How is heat exposure changing for vulnerable people in Germany?

Do German heat indicators and age-specific heat exposure describe the same changes when geography and observation periods are aligned?

The question

Temperature, exposure and health burden are different quantities. This German comparison examines age-specific exposure alongside measured heat, keeping modeled health estimates visibly separate.

Why it matters

Health planning depends on who experiences heat and their susceptibility, not only on a country's annual mean temperature.

AR6 assesses adverse impacts on people from human-caused climate change; accelerated adaptation and mitigation can reduce projected losses and damages (very high confidence).

Evidence and comparison

Unit of analysis
Country-age-group-year; Bundesland-year climate summaries remain contextual.
Baseline and denominator
Use DWD's documented hot-day threshold and 1991-2020 climate reference. Retain Lancet exposure baselines and population denominators rather than silently recalculating them.
First descriptive test
Compare published exposure per person and total exposure for older people and infants, alongside German summer conditions in the common observation years.
Deeper analysis
Use any supplied fixed-population comparison to distinguish demographic growth from changing exposure; otherwise describe both series without inventing an age-standardization calculation.

Keep the health model's intervals and counterfactual definition. National estimates cannot support precise claims about individual states or hospitals.

What these data do not show

  • Exposure is not a count of diagnosed illness.
  • These aggregates cannot identify the effect of a particular heat-action plan.
